Please read this quote.
“Art consists of limitation. The most beautiful part of every picture is the frame.” -Gilbert K. Chesterton.
What, What WHAT!? This is a philosopher telling us this. Isn’t it amazing that if someone labels himself or herself a philosopher, we tend to immediately straighten up and absorb their words as law? When someone labels themselves an artist, there is usually more of a “step back and wait for it” kind of vibe.
I love a frame. And it’s a great way to polish up any piece of art. It does seem to add an extra element of importance to a piece. But the frame is supposed to compliment the art within it. And in doing that, it also compliments the artist who created it, and those who view it. It’s not a boundary. It’s an award. It’s a pat on the back. It’s a “Hey, look at this!”
