Every single thing I see, hear and taste influences my design. I’ve been asked where I come up with some of my ideas. There is no one answer. It’s everything.
This past month was my birthday. My husband bought me this amazing green bag.
I’ve also been incredibly busy. So this view of my watch, with my boots in the background, and the string bracelet my daughter made for me is a picture I see several times a day.
To help you with your design projects, I thought we could go through the process together. Give you some ideas of how to let the outside in. Then figure out how to make it a design. To start, I went to the paint store and picked out some swatches. If you read back into my blog, you’ll see these colors have popped up a lot in the last few weeks. There’s a reason for that. I also went to my fabric stash and pulled this velvet wood grain sample. Then I threw a green polka dot pencil in.
This is just a start. But it’s already very strong. There is repetition not only in colors, but also in patterns. Look at the beads on my bracelet and the polka dot pencil. Look at the pattern on the string and on the fabric. It’s not immediately obvious but it’s there.
Pull out some items you have been using often in the last few weeks. It could be clothing, books, even vegetables you’ve been eating. Take a quick picture on your phone so you have them with you. The next step is to start sourcing and collecting. Take your reference photo and go. Tomorrow we will regroup with what we find.
