It sounds like a title for a fairytale. But it is something anyone can do.
Gorgeous, both this picture and my mom. This was her on her wedding day at her mother’s vanity. And today, very few people have room for this kind of luxurious, primping station. To be honest, I’m not sure I would want me or my daughters devoting this much of their room to their face. An antique walnut table and a framed wall mirror would suit me just fine. That said many of us don’t have the space for even that. But it is nice to have a little spot to check my eyeliner, put on my earrings, and check for evidence of breakfast in my teeth.
For one of my teen clients, we decided to make a pretty little vanity spot in her closet. From the outside, it has a full-length mirror and a door covered in cork and fabric for her to post notes and pictures of her friends. But inside, it is a groovy little spot for her to brush her luscious locks. (And she does have them. I'm so jealous.)
Inside this closet door, we applied wallpaper of her choosing. She loved delicacy and tradition, so she chose this delicate rose pattern in pastel blues and pinks. But the options are endless, so if you choose to do this look around and view many samples before you make your selection. To keep it simple, make sure you order rolls that are pre-glued. You just add water and you are ready to go like a Betty Crocker bundt cake.
Once it is dry, trim the edge with a sharp blade. Adding a fancy ribbon trim will help finish the edge where it may have shifted or landed just a little off. With a glue gun, start at one corner, and just keep going about a foot at a time until you end up where you started.
Now you are ready for the functional pieces. With this mirror, we screwed it straight through, right into the door. Above and below it we added some very pretty porcelain and glass hooks from Anthropologie. And don’t forget a fancy knob. Hidden inside the closet, is a tiny little bench that can be slid out when needed.
This may look very fancy and decadent, but it can be executed in the largest or smallest of spaces with supplies either from high-end stores or downtown thrift shops. I think all girls deserve a little hidden gem, just for them, the way they like it. Even us big girls.
