When I lived in Los Angeles, going to The Grove meant one thing to young girls, The American Girl Store! I would literally see people walk out with 4 shopping bags filled with “Girl” goodies. Sure, you could order from the catalogs. But if you wanted the real experience, LA was it.
But this week, American Girl has opened a location in San Francisco! Welcome to NoCal, Girl!
Recently, I was asked to design a dollhouse for one little girl’s American Girl collection…inside her closet…the whole closet! So fun. Want to know how? Here it is!
Start with wood shelving for the different floors. Leave about an inch of space between the back of the shelf and the back wall. This will make sense soon.
Next, pick out all of the fabrics you like for the walls of each room. Carefully measuring out the space between the shelves. Cut foam core boards to fit the space. To attach to the closet walls, take a little bit of spray adhesive and spray the board. Then wrap the fabric around the edges. To attach to the wall, spray the back of the board and press firmly into place.
Now get creative with this. Kitchen? Maybe a pattern with chocolate chip cookies or candy. Bathroom? Rubber ducks or fish. Kids room? How about little butterflies or sheep?
Now this is an important step. Once you put shelves in your closet, it may be that the ceiling light fixture only lights the top shelf. No Problem. Put in tiny lamps or twinkle lights. To hold wires, twist small hooks on the underside of the shelf above the room you want to light. This way, you can illuminate each floor, and simply slip the plug down the back of the closet to one power strip. (Now you see why we left that inch.) And remember, the walls are easily slipped out to allow a cord to fall behind. Then they can be pressed back into place.
Finally, I know you have outfits. Probably so many they are stuck in a bin on top of each other. Use the inside of your closet door. Measure down each side about 8 inches apart. Insert small eye hooks on either side. Then tie a string or ribbon between each set. When you are done, get a nice bag of clothespins and you have the perfect display for your American Girl latest fashions.
Looks like these American girls are having quite a party. There are lots of good times ahead in this house. Most importantly, parents, when it’s time to stop for bed time, turn out the lights, close the door, and everything is right in it’s place. Did I just hear a collective sigh of relief? Oh, yes. I have been in touch with that emotion ; )
